Described and Captioned Media Program

The Described and Captioned Media (DCMP) is pleased to announce that our collection of free-loan educational media now contains titles that are described for students who are blind or visually impaired! For years, DCMP (formerly the Captioned Media Program, or CMP) has maintained the most comprehensive free-loan library of captioned educational media for use by its members—those involved with educating students who are deaf or hard of hearing. The addition of captioned AND described media to our collection makes it possible for students who are blind or visually impaired to enjoy equal (and FREE) access to high-quality educational media.

This Halloween-themed flyer (http://www.dcmp.org/flyers/nadf134.pdf) announces new DCMP accessible media titles that contain a variety of innovative features. Anyone with a broadband Internet connection can view a streamed clip (2:14 in length) of “The Body Detectives” by pasting the following URL in your Web browser

http <http://play.rbn.com/?url=cmedia/cmedia/open/demand/z/5fvf/bd_clip.rm&proto=rtsp> ://play.rbn.com/?url=cmedia/cmedia/open/demand/z/5fvf/bd_clip.rm&proto=rtsp

(the free RealPlayer is required to view streaming titles—it can be downloaded from http://www.real.com).

Of course, we hope that you encourage educators, parents, and others involved with K–12 students who are blind, visually impaired, deaf, hard of hearing, or deaf-blind to visit the DCMP Web site (http://www.dcmp.org) to register for an account. All DCMP services are provided at absolutely NO CHARGE to our members, as the DCMP is funded by the U.S. Department of Education (http://www.ed.gov).

There are many new features on the new dcmp.org site for the blind, visually impaired, and deaf-blind. For example, you will note in the upper right-hand corner of our home page that a text-only version of the site is available. In addition, you will notice that our members are also able to customize their view of the site (selecting font, size, color, and other preferences) and save their preferred settings to be used each time they return.

Please feel free to distribute this message to anyone who may benefit from the DCMP’s services. If you have any questions about the DCMP, please contact me at tlohman@dcmp.org or call me at (800) 237-6213 x222.

Have a wonderful day!

Sincerely,
Thomas F. Lohman
