Summer Academy Program

Summer Academy programs provide enrichment classes for VI students of varied ability levels.  The Summer Academy program schedule changes each year.  Students may apply for and attend more than one week of Academies.  Space in each Academy is limited.  We consider applications for Academies as they arrive to us. However, to ensure that space may be available, we recommend that you begin the process of applying as early as possible. Students who attended a Summer Academy or Short Course in the past year, MAY still have a valid application for attending this summer.  Please refer to the current summer Academy Program descriptions for details or contact the Summer Programs Team; James Rudder (510) 936-5506 or jrudder@csb-cde.ca.gov or Scott Smith, Summer Academy Coordinator (510) 936-5527 or ssmith@csb-cde.ca.gov.

  • After receiving that form, we will contact you to hear more about the applicant and answer any questions you may have.
  • There is a rolling deadline depending on which Summer Academy you apply for.  The first deadline is April 30, 2018.  Please see the Summer Academy Descriptions for exact deadlines.  Space is limited for each Academy.
  • Room and board as well as participation in the academies are provided free of charge.
  • Parents are responsible for transportation to and from CSB for Summer Academies.

Week 1

Cane to Canine: Is a Guide Dog Right for You?
June 10 - June 15, 2018
(Registration closes, April 30, 2018)
Ages: Middle School and High School

CSB is excited to partner with Guide Dogs for the Blind (GDB) to offer an Orientation & Mobility Immersion Program! Students will work on O&M skills important for guide dog mobility such as the use of non-tactile feedback, auditory information, and time-distance estimation for indoor and outdoor travel. They will also experience Juno (simulated guide dog) routes in preparation for a trip to GDB and a walk with a working guide dog! Students will participate in daily hands-on activities with dogs and learn about the responsibilities of dog ownership. Get ready for a tail-wagging good week, and find out if a guide dog is right for you.

Activities in this course will support developing orientation and mobility, independent living skills, self-determination, sensory efficiency, and social interaction skills.

A Healthy Lifestyle; It's Your Choice
June 10 - June 15, 2018

Ages: Middle School and High School

Explore a variety of activities and food experiences to enhance your knowledge in making educated choices. Students will participate in various activities geared towards planning and preparing balanced snacks and meals, as well as learning about opportunities for physical fitness. Includes instruction in the Expanded Core Curriculum areas of Recreation and Leisure, Social Interaction Skills and Independent Living Skills.

Technology and Sports
June 10 - June 15, 2018

Tech and Sports Olympics
Welcome to the 2018 CSB Olympics! Test your limits both on the court and using technology to compete against each other in this action-packed week. During this one week program, students will break into groups and participate in various adapted sports such as track and field, biking, rock climbing, and goal ball or beep kickball. Additionally, they will use technology to measure and keep track of their strength and successes using google drive and explore other accessible technologies that may not typically be used in the classroom. Come push yourself and expand your skills! 

Week 2

Fine Arts
June 17 - June 22, 2018
(Registration closes, May 7, 2018)
Ages: 9 - 13

Discover or expand upon your creativity while performing in the style of a radio program! The show will be presented on the last day of the academy. Students will have the opportunity to engage in hands-on art activities such as painting and drawing. Music activities will include singing and playing musical instruments. Performances will also include reading in groups or individually. Join us for this exciting venture into old (and new!) fashioned radio while focusing on and improving students’ performance skills, art skills, social skills, and independence.

Technology and Sports
June 17 - June 22, 2018

Ready, Set, Get Fit

Are you READY? Because we are! We are Ready, Set, GET FIT!
Ready, Set, GET FIT! is going to be an opportunity to get your mind and body in shape! We will be learning about nutrition, networking, gym memberships, apps, cooking, physical activities, and more! At the beginning of each day, we will practice mindfulness and stretching to get prepared for the many activities we have planned. You will learn how much and what kinds of foods your body needs and how to shop for them. We will teach you ways to get motivated and stay motivated to keep yourself healthy using people in your life in addition to apps on your smart devices.

Advanced Computer Science
June 24 - June 29, 2018

Ages: Middle School and High School

Computer Science Academy is based on the Exploring Computer Science (ECS) curriculum and is designed to introduce students to the breadth of the field of computer science through an exploration of engaging and accessible topics. Rather than focusing the entire course on learning particular software tools or programming languages, the course is designed to focus on the conceptual ideas of computing and help students understand why certain tools or languages might be utilized to solve particular problems. The goal is to develop in students the computational practices of algorithm development, engineering design, problem solving and programming within the context of problems that are relevant to the lives of today’s students. Students will also be introduced to topics such as interface design, limits of computers, and societal and ethical issues.

Experience Camping and Backpacking
June 24 - June 29, 2018

Ages: Middle School and High School

Do you have dreams of adventure camping or backpacking through parks or the wilderness? Get a glimpse of what backpackers do. This course will offer an overview of what is required for camping and backpacking trips, including gear, food and nutrition, and discussions about safety, environment, and seasonal considerations.

This course will include several morning hikes and one night camping out on the beautiful CSB campus. Learn how to light a fire, pitch a tent, pack a backpack, navigate a trail and spend a night under the stars. Students should be comfortable walking a few miles each day.

Activities in this course will support developing social interaction, teamwork, recreation and leisure, and self-determination.
